Dog owners need to get tick-ready

The Australian Veterinary Association is warning dog owners, in Queensland and NSW especially; to be prepared for ticks this season, though owners in all states should be careful. The mild winter this year in several states resulted in perfect breeding conditions for ticks.

Veterinarian and Dogs NSW spokesman Dr Peter Higgins says: “Ticks can kill small animals and even larger ones. Tick prevention is crucial because the onset of paralysis and death can occur in a matter of hours. Dog owners must contact their vet as soon as a tick is found.”

Early warning signs include vomiting and a visible weakness when standing and walking.
