Making sure your dog gets a sufficient amount of exercise, is vital to your dog’s health. But the amount of exercise they need depends on their size and their age.f8bc4dd506226f8d39f604abe27f9b86_dogs_1316_866

No matter how big or small, every dog must do some amount of exercise each day, taking into account dog’s that have special needs and some dogs have slowed down due to old age, they still need to do some form of exercise. If a dog doesn’t exercise they will become bored frustrated and possibly obese. Not exercising can also affect a dog’s behaviour, they will less obedient and snappy. A lot of dog owners have said that after keeping their dog inside and not letting him out to exercise much, their dog started to get cranky all the time and was gaining weight. After letting the outside a little more every day and getting them to exercise everyday, the dog’s mood grew and they were visibly much healthier.

Even though the amount of exercise a dog needs depends on their age, size and breed, all dogs should be doing from 30 minutes – 2 hours of exercise each day. Breeds in the hunting, herding and working breeds like the Labrador and Shepherds will need more exercising than any other breeds. If your dog is a part of these breed groups and is in good health than they should be getting at least 30 minutes of rigorous exercise.

Older dogs may not need very much exercise due to achy bones and muscles, too much weight or they just don’t feel like it anymore. But they still need some amount of exercise to prevent obesity and depression.

Less active dogs will also not need very much exercise. As long and the exercise stays within the 30 minutes – 2 hours mark then your dog is sure to be getting a sufficient amount of exercise.

If your dog is not accustomed to exercise and you want to get them a little healthier and get them moving a lot more, then it’s best if you gradually get them into exercise. Start out small, take a ten minute walk and make sure they get a lot of water afterwards. Every one or two days, taking them out for a walk and gradually get them more accustomed to going for half an hour to an hour walks for smaller dogs and 1 hour to an hour and a half for medium and large dogs.

Not all of their exercise has to be done on walks. They can run/walk around in the backyard if it’s big enough and dog friendly. If you don’t have a dog, then it’s suggested that you go for walks every one to three days.
